Frequently Asked Questions — State Taxes

Answers below reflect verified 2026 rates.

06 — FAQ
01Which states have no income tax?
Nine states: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Washington still applies a 7% capital gains excise tax to gains above $250,000 for high earners, even though it has no wage income tax.
02Which state has the highest income tax?
California, at a 13.3% top marginal rate on income over $1 million (12.3% base rate plus a 1% Mental Health Services surcharge). Hawaii (11.0%), New York (10.9%), and New Jersey (10.75%) follow.
03Does New York City have its own income tax?
Yes — NYC residents pay an additional local income tax of up to 3.876% on top of New York State's rate, which is one reason combined marginal rates for high earners in the city are among the highest in the country.
04How do I calculate my take-home pay for my state?
Select your state above to open its dedicated calculator, which applies that state's 2026 brackets, standard deduction, and any local taxes on top of federal withholding.
05Do I pay state tax in the state where I live or where I work?
Generally both, with a credit to avoid double taxation — your resident state taxes all your income, and your work state taxes income earned there. Some neighboring states have reciprocity agreements that remove the need to file in both.
06Which states have the lowest taxes?
Beyond the 9 no-tax states, North Dakota (2.5%) and Arizona (2.50%) have the lowest top marginal rates among states that do tax income, followed closely by Ohio (2.75%) and Indiana (2.95%).
07Does my state tax Social Security benefits?
Most states don't. In 2026, only eight states tax Social Security to any degree: Colorado, Connecticut, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Utah, and Vermont — and most of those offer exemptions for lower- and middle-income recipients.
08How do I change my state tax withholding?
Submit an updated state withholding form (often a state-specific version of the W-4) to your employer's payroll or HR department; most states let you adjust your allowances or a flat additional withholding amount at any time.
